The Border regiment. was raised as the Lucas's Regiment in 1702. and the 34th regiment in 1751. changing to the 57th Foot in 1755 and the 55th Foot in 1757.  The two regiments became the 1st and  2nd Battalion of the Border regiment in 1881.

Victoria Crosses were awarded to 10 men of the regiment. During the Crimean war 4 were won, the first being to Private W. Coffrey DCM.. One Victoria Cross was won during the Indian Mutiny and another 5 during World War One.

Second Lieutenant Vernon Crawling, Under Heavy Fire, To A German Aeroplane, Brought Down just Behind The British Front Line.

When a German aeroplane was brought down close behind the British frontline trenches on October 26th 1915, the enemy began shelling the spot in order to destroy the machine. Second Lieutenant Stuart Arthur Vernon, of the 3rd Battalion The Border Regiment (attached to the Intelligence corps), crept out at great personal risk and saved the aeroplane from destruction. He brought back very valuable documentary information, and for conspicuous gallantry on several occasions, but notably this, was awarded the M.C. 

First World War antique black and white book plate published c.1916-18 of glorious acts of heroism during the Great War. This plate may also have text on the reverse side which does not affect the framed side. Title and text describing the event beneath image as shown. Paper size 10.5 inches x 8.5 inches (27cm x 22cm).
